What Marketing Professors Are Really Wrestling With in the Age of AI

Key takeaways from our Marketing & AI Faculty Roundtable

We recently hosted a roundtable with marketing faculty from universities across the country to discuss a shared challenge: how AI is changing marketing education — and what responsibility higher education has in preparing students for that reality.

This wasn’t a product demo or a tools discussion. It was an open conversation about what’s working, what feels unresolved, and where faculty are actively experimenting. Below are some of the most consistent themes that emerged.

1. The Real Risk Isn’t AI Use — It’s Uninformed AI Use

One of the strongest points of alignment across the group was this:
the biggest risk in today’s classroom isn’t students using AI too much — it’s students using it without understanding.

Many faculty noted that students are already using AI extensively, but largely through informal channels: trial and error, peers, internships, or social media. Without explicit instruction, that often leads to:

  • over-trusting outputs

  • limited awareness of hallucinations and bias

  • poor verification habits

  • and shallow use that replaces thinking instead of enhancing it

The gap isn’t exposure. It’s interpretation, judgment, and context.

2. Process Matters as Much as Output (Sometimes More)

Several professors shared that AI has forced a rethink of assessment itself.

Historically, grading has focused heavily on final deliverables — slides, reports, campaigns. With AI in the mix, many faculty are shifting emphasis toward:

  • how students used AI

  • why they made certain choices

  • what they changed, rejected, or refined

  • and whether they can clearly articulate their reasoning

Some examples discussed:

  • required AI disclosures

  • reflective summaries of AI use

  • linking to chat histories or prompts

  • grading evaluation and decision-making, not just polish

This shift mirrors what employers increasingly value: not raw output, but judgment.

3. AI as a Partner, Not a Replacement

A recurring metaphor was AI as a coworker, tutor, or thought partner — not a shortcut.

Faculty emphasized teaching students to:

  • use AI to brainstorm, challenge assumptions, and explore alternatives

  • avoid “abdication of thinking”

  • understand when AI helps — and when it shouldn’t be used at all

This framing resonated strongly in marketing, where value creation, context, and human insight remain central.

4. Marketing Programs Shouldn’t Become Tech Programs

There was broad agreement that AI literacy doesn’t mean turning marketing courses into computer science courses.

Instead, AI is amplifying the importance of:

  • communication and presentation skills

  • evaluation and judgment

  • collaboration and relationship-building

  • ethical decision-making

  • and the ability to explain why something works

Several faculty noted that as technical tasks become more automated, these “human” skills become even more differentiating — not less.

5. Students Are Eager — and Anxious

Faculty shared that students are highly motivated to learn AI, but also deeply concerned about:

  • entry-level job prospects

  • employer expectations

  • certifications vs. real skills

  • and how to position themselves credibly

A common recommendation: students should be able to clearly articulate how they work with AI, not just list tools on a résumé.

AI literacy is becoming foundational — not optional.

6. There’s No Single Playbook (Yet)

Perhaps the most honest takeaway: even experienced faculty are still figuring this out.

Policies vary widely. Approaches differ by course, institution, and comfort level. What did come through clearly was the value of shared experimentation — learning from peers, students, and industry together.

No one claimed to have a perfect model. But everyone agreed that doing nothing isn’t an option.
