Preparing Alabama Students for Tomorrow’s Careers

As artificial intelligence and data continue to transform every industry, preparing students with technical, analytical, and professional skills has become more important than ever. Through the Alabama Data Scholars Program, QuantHub is helping bridge the gap between education and workforce readiness by connecting students with meaningful internship experiences that reflect the evolving needs of Alabama employers.

The 2026 Alabama Data Scholars cohort demonstrates the growing demand for data and AI talent across the state. This summer, 52 student interns have been placed with 23 Alabama organizations, providing students with real-world work experiences while helping employers build stronger talent pipelines for the future. From technology companies and healthcare organizations to manufacturers, nonprofits, financial institutions, and government agencies, employers are investing in the next generation of skilled professionals.

Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all internship experience, the Alabama Data Scholars Program intentionally prepares students for specific career pathways. Every learning module, technical skill, and internship experience has been designed around the actual competencies Alabama employers are seeking today.

Built Around Employer Needs

The Alabama Data Scholars curriculum begins with employers—not assumptions. QuantHub analyzed internship opportunities across dozens of participating organizations to identify the technical and professional skills appearing most frequently in internship job descriptions. These insights directly shaped the program’s learning pathways, ensuring students gain experience with the tools and concepts employers value most.

The result is a curriculum aligned with 43 internship roles spanning 20 industries and organized into 17 major skill categories. Every course and learning experience maps directly back to employer demand, creating a stronger connection between classroom learning and workplace success.

A Shared Foundation Before Specialized Career Tracks

Every Alabama Data Scholar begins the program by completing QuantHub’s Advanced AI Foundations course. This shared curriculum ensures every intern develops a common understanding of artificial intelligence before entering specialized career pathways.

During the first two weeks, students build competency across six foundational areas: business challenges and AI applications, the history and current state of AI, the fundamental characteristics of AI systems, generative AI use cases in professional workflows, prompt engineering techniques, and ethical and security considerations surrounding AI. These core competencies establish the foundation students need regardless of their internship placement.

After completing Advanced AI Foundations, students transition into one of two specialized learning tracks that align with their internship responsibilities. This structure allows every intern to receive targeted preparation for the specific work they will perform while maintaining a consistent foundation in responsible AI literacy.


Two Specialized Pathways for Modern Careers

Students pursuing Track A: AI & Technology prepare for technical roles that require programming, problem solving, and AI development skills. Coursework emphasizes algorithmic thinking, Python programming, SQL, data wrangling, AI output evaluation, critical thinking for AI, prompt engineering, reasoning strategies, context engineering, human-AI collaboration, descriptive statistics, Excel analysis, and visualization techniques. These skills prepare students for internships focused on software development, technical AI applications, automation, and emerging technologies.

Students entering Track B: Data & Business Analytics develop skills for data-driven decision making across business functions. Their learning focuses on Excel workspaces, descriptive statistics, advanced formulas, pivot tables, nested logic, AI-assisted data analysis, project planning, prompt engineering, context engineering, AI tool evaluation, and business intelligence techniques. These experiences prepare students for roles involving analytics, operations, finance, marketing, consulting, and organizational decision support.

Behind these experiences is a dedicated team committed to student success. Program Director Kelsey Bickett has cultivated partnerships with organizations across Alabama that provide meaningful internship opportunities aligned with strategic workforce needs. Throughout the summer, Lucas Hershberger mentors students, helping them connect QuantHub’s coursework to their internship experiences while ensuring they develop the technical and professional skills necessary to succeed in the workplace.

CEO Joshua Jones has consistently championed expanding AI and data literacy throughout Alabama, particularly by increasing opportunities for students in rural communities. His vision recognizes that access to modern technology education should not depend on geography, and that every student deserves the opportunity to pursue careers in Alabama’s growing innovation economy.

The internship program reflects that mission by exposing students to the skills employers are actively requesting today. Analysis of employer projects shows particularly strong demand for data analytics, AI technologies, visualization, programming, databases, and automation—demonstrating how quickly AI has become integrated across industries.
