My name is Anna, and I’m a rising junior at the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering in Huntsville, Alabama.
This summer, I had an amazing opportunity to be part of the 2025 Alabama Data Scholars program, a statewide initiative powered by QuantHub, Innovate Alabama, and numerous industry partners.
For a young woman interested in the data science field, this internship has been both educational and empowering. Through the program, I was matched with the science team at Joey James Law Firm that specializes in environmental law. There, I dove into real-world applications of data science, specifically using environmental data modeling in litigation. This was a great match, as not only am I interested in statistics and working with data, but also am an advocate for the environment.
At Joey James Law Firm I’ve conducted research on data sourcing, preparation, and processing and written research reports. Aside from technical skills, I’ve gained firsthand experience working in a professional environment: from collaborating on projects to presenting insights. This experience expanded how I think about data modeling, not just as numbers, but as a powerful tool that can truly help others and change the world.
“For a young woman interested in the data science field, this internship has been both educational and empowering.”
Beyond professionalism and high level science projects, what stood out the most at Joey James Law was the community. From day one, the firm fostered a welcoming environment. My mentors were always ready to offer feedback, guidance, and encouragement. Even though I only came into the office once a week and worked the rest of the time remotely, I felt like a member of their team.
In addition to the internship, I was able to participate in professional development sessions sponsored by the Alabama Data Scholars program. These workshops have taught me how to create resumes, adapt to modern AI hiring systems, and use AI tools more effectively. We also have had many interesting speakers share their experiences in data science and AI.
I’m incredibly thankful to my host organization, QuantHub and the Alabama Data Scholars program, and my mentors who have supported me along the way. This internship really boosted my confidence to pursue a STEM education and solidified my interest in data science.
